Learning

I have an acquaintance who is very principled person and he was telling me that his son is also like him and cant tolerate indiscipline even, once he was standing in a queue and as is usual, another man tried to go ahead saying he was in a hurry. His son told him that all the people standing patiently in a queue are not without any work, they are also in a hurry, but following a discipline. That man was wearing good clothes and speaking English, so by his appearance a third person says that...see  even educated people behave like this this..so his son said.......not educated, education brings a character in a person..( even oxford dictionary states this)..he may be literate, but we cant call him educated, and the other person was quite amazed and said so that he never ever thought like that, though this is the truth. And this incident reminded me of one of my post where I also said the same thing that in India anyone who speaks English, is considered educated well, even some may call him learned also.whereas another one who may be highly accomplished but doesnt know English is not so revered.....
And this slave mentality is affecting us in other areas also, anything from the west is good..if they have all the freedom we must also get it,West has so many good qualities, but we are copying the worst only and the results will be known in the next decade, when we would have got all the money but without any peace or values or family.

we are running downhill towards western society and forgetting about out own values and ways ..

west has good things but as they say we learn the bad ones faster ..

knowing english doesnot make one educated ,a few members in my family are totally uneducated but they speak english better then me ..

good post :)

Yes, Renu. We follow the West in so many ways, but discipline, a 'no, no'. Funny thing is, our people stand in queues patiently with nearly 2ft. gap between the person standing in front of them, in London. But here, the pushing and skipping the queue continues...!

As you said, there is no better terminology to denote this particular nature of people here than 'slave mentality'

Right there Renu. Education should make a person behave well, have good relation with others, respect others. Other wise just speaking English or even getting degrees does not make a person educated.

What we lack in India is the civic sense. Education is not just learning alphabets. We jump queues, spit on pavements, urinate on to walls, jump traffic lights and what not.Rules here are meant only for the poor. Our politicians never wait at a traffic signal, or never carry their bags. The other day I saw the president of the EU deplaning, coming out of the air pot, walking to the subway, and taking the train to his office, all the while carrying his bag and talking to people.
How many of out politicians would do that?
Civiv sense can improve only with improving quality of life.

Wow! I quite liked that statement...'he may be literate but not educated' and this is so true.

Uptake above hits the nail completely!

Yeah, and I quite dislike such behaviour as well and believe me, even after doing that the person does not even have the decency to be apologetic.

P.S: I'm here, don't worry :)
Just been a wee bit busy. How are you doing? :)

Reading alphabets is not education or literacy. We notoriously lack in civic sense. We are known to spit on the roads, piss on to walls, jump traffic lights where we have them, and what not.Our leaders show as examples by lifting their dhotis in parliment and never stopping anywhere on the road.
We need more time even to think of a civic code.Unless living standards improve, nothing will change.

Yes, I completely agree with your post. The literacy rate may be growing in India but we have to pay a tough price for that. Our values, culture are all slowly vanishing day by day.

Speaking in English as one might consider, can win one's heart but your values, behavior is what earn respect for you.

Renu, Maybe the person is in real hurry? I mean, he bothered to offer explanation saying he is in hurry right? Maybe...just maybe, he really was in a very bad hurry? Like a sick child at the hospital or something like that?

Couldnt have agreed with you more. We are highly influenced by the west. I know there are many good things that we can imbibe from them. But as you rightly put we seem to be imbibing all the wrong habits.

As for jumping the queue, it seems to be our favourite hobby. Whats funny is when we are abroad we are at our behavioral best, abiding by all the rules and regulations. But the minue we board a flight, we just let ourselves loose! Its so frustrating!

I agree with your post. Completely!!

Today, the literacy rate has gone high but we have to pay a high price for it. Our values and culture are diminishing day by day.

You are right. Learn only bad things from the West. Should learn good things also.

very true.. just being literate doesnt count as education.. I have seen women who have dressed well push others and enter a bathroom even when others are standing in queue. Many people lack proper manners, even though they may be working at a great place, learning lot of money.

So true:
education brings a character in a person.
Just a paper degree does not bring character.
And I have see the other side too.
People who are not "educated" but have real character and moral values.

Abroad people respect the queue system, they will never barge in before the person in front has not finished the job. But here we are always in hurry.
Things would improve in future, we must not be negative and always think we are doomed.
