GENDER AND RESERVATION

When our new president was chosen last time, her support by some woman and celebrities set me thinking that for the highest post in our country, the eligibility criteria should be the gender or merit?Should we be proud of a person's qualities or gender? I fail to undertand the hype about a woman being the president.Did the tenure of Rabri Devi made Bihar any better? Did the atrocities stop against woman over there. And If we want to be progressive in the real sense then we must stop thinking in the terms of woman and man, instead always support the talent, qualifications.

Today we see that a person who has been unsuccessful as a minister is being promoted to be a president..what logic?
Everytime a minister is accused of corruption , he resigns and after six months he is inducted again at a senior and better position.good logic na?

Its the same as in reservations in education, we must give the financial and other support to underprivileged so as to make them qualify for higher education, but the higher education shoould be on merit and merit alone. Otherwise we shall have serious repercussions in the long run.

I agree on this, there is no justification for quotas by caste or gender in education, esp. higher / professional education... financial assistance, of course, for needy and deserving students is important.

Namaste.....
You make very powerful and logical points though politics is hardly powerful. I think the joyousness for a woman being president is celebrated because of women's fight for equality, justice and fairness in the midst of patriarchy and though you are quite right that gender does not equal a solution it is the reasoning they use for their celebratory behaviour.

Stay blessed have a good week.

Excellent point. But how can we change? Unless, the individuals who vote for money or caste realize their mistake.

Totally agree with you. Had politics and governance been logical, India wud have been a super power by now.

Quota raj has ruined the country beyond measure and the powers that be are least bothered about it. When we have reservations with low marks even in professions like medicine, what can one say? Politics is also just a business in our country and there is reservation there too.

again we need reforms regarding selection of president and always support only economic reservation.

Very good points!

Ash: this reservation is ruining the quality in everything.

Rhapsody B; Yes equality..but where is equality when we choose not on merit but gender....

SG: we must educate every one, then may be..

Zephyr:The least we can do is follow our beliefs in atleast in our life..

Mom Of A &a: thanks!

Gender should not be a basis for selection to constitutional posts.Merit and suitability should alone matter
But reservation for women in other areas is a must. With 52% in population their presence is disproportionatlely small in most walks of life.We have not made any headway even after decades in getting reservation in legislatures. They must be vested with political power.

Quotas must go in every area.

If we want to encourage any specific underprivileged group we(govt) should give them assistance to improve their qualifications.

I agree with you. My niece is appeared for AIEEE this year. While only a few thousands were called from the general quote, from the SC/ST there were 50000 called for counselling. Same is the state in all govt./competitive exams. Sad state of affairs where caste and religion get priority, rather than merit.

As for gender push in politics, I'd any day pick Nitish or Narendra Modi over Mayawati and Mamata!

Kparthsaarthi: I disagree here sir, I believe in empowering the people thru education and then let it lead them where they want to go...

manju: exactly..thats the way, but who wants it, they are saving their vote banks, country may go to dogs..

Neha:Yes Neha, we must go for merit in every aspect of our life...

A very clear post. Yes, politics is a game where talent and good intentions do not win. Esp in our country where the political system is biased towards one particular family, the only way to win and make a name for yourself is by sticking with the family. (Sounds like mario puzo's God father) But then in all honesty, I think that reservation is the first tool that keeps racial, gender, caste differences alive and boiling. But as much as we can argue to remove reservation, I think that our political system has become too much vested in the concept, that if taken out- the system itself will collapse. Dont you think so??

Renu said...

Muthu:I dont think that anything will collapse:) rather then only underprivileged will realise the truth and will have better future than today.because today politicians are risaing at their cost.

The quality of education should improve from the basic level. Then the quality of the student will improve at least to a certain level, so that they can match the quality of other sections of people. Now, because of the low quality of education they get, they get degrees and jobs with quotas and not quality. They will never get the respect from the society.

Renu said...

Sandhya:Thats the main problem..they will nevr get respect and they will nevcer come up in life this way..

Nice topic. Politics and its complexities will not change so easily. It can only happen if there is some way of changing human nature - power, greed, inequality and so on.

Let us do our bit however small - in the long run it will make a big difference.

Thanks and regards.
