Is it?

It has been a long time and I have so much to say but still thoughts are so muddled up in my mind that it would take tine to sort them out.I was on my vacation trip to my siblings and mom and state.yes there is a change in places also.Specially if you go there in winter, everything is so different. And now living here for so many years, I am not used to cold weather, so instead of enjoying quilts and hot tea, I found it troublesome.. See this happens even in India, why blame those who immigrate abroad:)..There are always few things which we miss and other which we dont like.
I miss the way we celebrate the festivals in north, and those get together like bhajans, Sundar kand path and even kitty parties, and people meeting with open hearts, but totally dislike the display of wealth in everything and so much wastage of food just to show off,and people always running after money.....
Here I like the spiritual bend of mind, people more interested in fine arts, simple food, I just wish that they were a little more social and cordial to visitors.
People like me sometimes feel homeless, as we dont feel like we belong to north the way we should and here in south we are always north Indians so who am I?
I am an Indian....may be thats why we feel national  identity more than the regional one....
What do you think?

Good to see your post after so long. It is possible to maintain our culture wherever we go. Here, we had all night bhajans and vedic chants on Shivratri.

One observation: With the exception of Chennai, you may not find such a large gathering of people (normal educated middle class people) chanting vedas even in India today.

A beautiful thought that is true.Ours is a country of varied culture and diverse traditions. But there is a common thread of our Indianness running through the entire country. Each part has many things to learn from others and many to share. Like the Hamsa bird,we should choose the best and leave the rest..You have imbibed the best in all

Renu, enjoyed the read. Also been absent for a very long time.
Agree with your national identity image...would be so nice if not all a large majority thought the same way...

True.First we are Indians and we should be also, then only we are Malayalis or Panjabis or Rajasthanis. While the poor monger for a morsel of food, the Haves waste it just for pomp and show. It is high time we curtailed it.

Wowwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!! what a thot to be back! imagine me... i am forever in the see saw. Totally agree with you that north the social interactions are very warm. in south the way of life may be simple, but the human touch is missing. yes i too think i am an indian. these issues can never be ironed out. me being an insider in both a north indian and south indian home am not able to bring about any change. so i think we have to live with this rift. :(

i thot u might have been on a trip to ur maternal place. hope u had fun.

uptake:In chennai people chant but bhajans are in Tamil only...but in north India, organising bhajans and sunder kand of Ramayana is very much a way of life, a regular thing and I enjoy there because it is in Hindi:)and I would love to have it here in chennai in my house but i cant arrange anyone who could play dholak:(

KParthsarthi:Yes I console myself saying the same thing:) and thank you sir for making me feel better.

Gauri Guha: I feel surprised when I see educated people talking regional...

Tara: everybody feels it:)

rudraprayaga:I strongly feel about the wastage of food.

Amrita:we always think alike:)..yes i had lots of fun and my siblings are such a pleasure and blessing to me that I advise everyone to have atleast two children:)

Found in Folsom: But we want to belong somewhere completely..I have that desire:)

Renuji, I can understand your sentiments. Having moved around a bit and never having stayed in my home state, I also feel that I have no roots and am a perpetual outsider. But it also enabled me to see our diverse cultural heritage and I am thankful for that. I love sundar kaand pujas too.

"I am an Indian" is what we all need to feel. This is true National integration and we need this spirit all the more in present times.

Whether N.Indian or SI or foreigner I think we all feel a lil out of place when we go to a different setting:-). Personally it's ok because to experience new cultures and way of living & feeling a bit out of place is better than being in one place all my life;-P.
