WHY INDIA?

why india?......This question must be haunting many...........
Because we are Gujratis, Marathis, Punjabis, Bengalis, Malyalee....not INDIANS.
* Because our leaders protect themselves with 350 police personell & 50 cars. Who cares about the common man.
* Because politicians will run to console families of slain terrorists merely to earn some brownie points.
* Because we are scared...........scared to execute one measely convicted terrorist.
* Because we elect a PM who is more of an academician than an administrator.
* Because we believe that social equality can be achieved not by teaching a man how to fish but by providing him fish for days to come.
* Because democracy in India enables us to condemn anything & everything whereas the propounders of the Magna Carta restrict speech against God & the Queen.
* Because for most of us, nation building is restricted to compiling the Indian Cricket team.
* Because we let Mandir & Masjid run our daily lives not roti, kapda or makan.
* Because we let tolerance lead to impotence.
* Because in a nation of a billion people it is difficult now to find a single "man".
THATS WHY INDIA !!

Good one! I especially agree with the first point. I was fortunate to grow up in a cosmopolitan city like Bombay, so I think seeing myself as an Indian first came very naturally.

Whereas I feel that my in-laws who are from our native state identify first with the state. Its not that they're anti-India or anything like that, but I think that when you grow up in a single-culture environment, without knowing much about other cultures, its difficult to see the bigger picture.

Maybe initially, dividing India on the basis of language may have been simpler for administrative reasons, but I think in the long run, it has done more harm than good because it has restricted people's identities at the state level - everybody thinks they are better than the others, and are almost obsessive about protecting their language and customs.

But despite this reality, I feel there is hope for us especially because of the communication media. Today we can so easily read and come to know about other cultures and interact with different people. All you need to have is an open mind, because learning about new cultures and practices only enriches you as a person.

Amrita: yeah, in many states i saw the people who were tilted towards tegion and caste, but i always chose to ignore that and I found many who were seetest people on the earth. and my faith is this...this world runs because of the second type of people.

i've always seen myself as an indian first. probably because i've lived in a very cosmopolitan community though the town i grew up in was not so cosmo, and my family has a very cosmo and global bloddline. i infact get very irritated if someone ask me my community or caste or religion..because then interaction begins with some preassumptions.

having said that, i think it's a very indian thing to classify others and oneself as a bengali or punjabi or marathi or bihari first then as an indian next....we have too much of an exotic diversity :)

A: yeah we have too much of diversity, but the charm lies in the unity in diversity. U know when i was in bengal...the mail wud ask me .....aap des ja rahe ho..meaning r u going to DES(literally it means country though she meant it as my hometown. And I always used to wonder why our psyche is like that?
But I pride myself on always feeling an Indian first and I never consider myself an outsider in any state as this is MY COUNTRY.

This was a nice post. I agree with the point that mentions that we cannot achieve social equality by giving away fishes. It is very important to teach him how to fish! The day electors learn of this, is the day that we will be out of the mess that we are into. Is there any way to propagate such philosophies to masses (As the internet is very niche and is accessible to a very few!)

Destination Infinity: I think the solution lies in education and development. And we must talk about it to everybody we meet. Like if everybody makes even domestic servants aware, we can change the scenario. My nephew though very young, just 18, but he keeps talking about all this to milk man, servant everybody he comes in contact with:)
