MY HYDERABAD TRIP

last week i went to Hyderabad for a week, and i really felt that i have crossed the state, i mean there was difference in many things, but the best thing was the weather.........it was so pleasant over there, no sweating and no need of AC.............what a relief it is:). I observed many things like....

Hyderabad is changing and developing very fast like none other city.

it is much cheaper than chennai---their all the fruits were in abundance and with good quality and the rates were much lower.

Now the attitude of people is changing and its no more a prerogative of children to say...we dont want to live with parents or voice their choices. i met many families all young people in their 30..s and working and saw their parents are not ready to live with them permanently inspite of them requesting, pleading whatever. They will come and go:) as they want. Now the parents are exercising their right to their life and what a way....................I was happy also and sad also. happy becuase now they are no more dependent on their children and have let go......their emotional baggage and they are no more.....bechaare...........or to be taken for granted.

Sad ...because with this attitude a very beautiful bond.......is going to be changed, because young people may demand their freedom to live the way they want as their right, but they are very reluctant to give the same right to their parents willingly and I feel the equations are going to change very much in the next 10 years.. Because parents child bond was such, that whatever the children did, but in their hour of need, parents used to forget all the hurt and humiliations and were always a pillar of support, no righteousness, self respect, boredom, nothing came in between....
Then i saw that Indian railway system needs some drastic changes. Like so far there is no help for carrying the luggage, coolies are there ,many, but sitting idle..why? because they always demand exorbitant money, some give in but most people end up taking their luggage themselves. and it becomes a vicious circle......they dont get much customers, so they demand high money......... and carrying luggage is not possible for everybody, So my suggestion is..

either the rates must be fixed for coolies and there should be adherence to them by force(otherwise nobody listens here.). this is better, because in a country of a big population, we must solve the problem with engaging the people, not machines..

We can provide them some trolleys...and for them there should be ramp on all the platforms.

any other suggestions?

and I highly dislike this idea of tip everywhere? It increases the expenses to a totally different label, so why? earlier the tip was for an exceptional service, now tip is mandatory,, even if u dont give the tip, they round off the amount, like may cab bill was for 252/ he rounded it off to 260/-.

i read somewhere that what an irony........a person earning 30000/ or so giving a tip to a person

earning more than him? that is the way it happens in five star hotels. While the tip was earlier from the elite to the workers, now tip is everywhere, only the amount varies. If in a hotel---bearer is serving us, he is doing his duty , and getting paid for that from his employer then why tip? same way a cab driver is not taking us anywhere free, so why tip? Even in Rajdhaani express, in the end of journey.........that fellow comes asking for the tip.....this is the limit, can u believe it, even if 100 people give 10/- he will get 1000 in a day. does he deserve it?

The same rage I felt , when Bindra got 1.5 crores for shooting in a game, and till today he is being felicitated by someone or other, while M C SHARMA ,( and many others like him) our best man, dies shooting at the terrorists and gets only 5 lakhs.... life of an important officer worth only 5 lakhs.......and then we say we have shortage of good men.......and I fully believe that his family will get this money also after lots of harassment only, so have we lost our mind or priorities?

Tell me what do u think about it?

Very truea Sharma gets a paltry compensation, very very unfortunate..but honestly,he got it, covered by TV, so perhaps govt got forced to give it..Just imagine the plight of an unsung soldier who also gets killed by terrorist..he just fades`away into history as Govt statistics..very tragic

thanks for dropping by on my blog

and yes..
as far as i have heard.. hyderabad is changing rapidly.. becoming a proper metro city..

about the coolies.. well considering we are going hi tech in most of areas... that wouldnt be a bad idea.. but then again.. there are loads of ppl whose lively hood is based on those types of work.. so whats the alternative for them???

tip.. hehe well its something i find very amusing.. hehe and yes i do agree with ur way of thinking .. they are doing the job and getting paid for it.. unless the person has served u sooo veryy well.. and made such an impact on you.. then thats fine..

all these sports ppl get the recognition or over recognition.. its not that they haven't worked hard.. its more like.. yeh there is better things that one could do with that kind of finances.. and yes army ppl are still not worth that much as the sports ppl are.. its sad..

Renu said...

compassion unlimited: Thats what i want to say..we must fix the compensation for everything, make it like a target in sales.....like for cricketers and all other sports amount may be fixed, today it varies with the whims of govt. and the frenzy created by media, why? Its true in everything...in one accident compensation is 2 lakhs, somewhere else its 50000 all depending upon the publicity why? Is the life and death have different value for different people?

Ani; That is what I am trying to say..this way they are not earning much, just sitting there, give thyem some technical help and fix their rates, more ppl will take their help and it will be a win win situation for everybody
For tips, they must be optional, not mandatory, I like this in Apollo Hospital, they discourage tipping, because then it will make the difference in the behaviour of their ppl, imagin in a hospital...what will happen then... I wud prefer even hotels discouraging the tips....but then they are saving their money and fleecing customers, as they pay less and expect the employees to compensate it by tips:)

I guess we're so keen to build our image internationally that we will go to any lengths to reward those who shine on the world stage. Sports people must be encouraged, true, but this disparity between international stars and national heroes is not right. Definitely the families of those who have died in duty should get as much.

Renu said...

Disparity is everywhere, even among Indian heroes also, there is just no rule, protocol whatever, its all momentary, there must be a policy on everything.

my space said...

I agree about sports persons being treated like heroes when they win but the true Heroes are just overlooked..
As for tips..Renu ,it is a part of hospitality industry..Their basic pay is very less..the main source of income is tips..the idea being that it will motivate them to perform better..but like everything in India this too is being misused..
as for coolies...i wish the govt or some NGO would provide them with some skills..it is inhuman..i remember last trip i took a train and the poor guy carried 2 big suitcases and 2 handbags for us..me n my sis were dead carrying jus 1 handbag..his legs were trembling. We stopped him got a cart and paid him exactly what he asked for..

And everyone who has been to hybad keeps complaining :) .. climate wise i always felt bangalore is the best .. its pretty cool all thru the year .. onli problem is pollution .. its increasing at an alarming level ..

yeps .. parents , more so its the mother .. no one can replace her in this world .. there is no ego , no selfishness , nothing whatsoever with her .. there cld b exceptions here n there .. its just been me n my mother frm past 5 years .. n i knw it all :) ..

what i think is , do not take away anything frm Bindra .. but give more to M C Sharma .. Getting a gold medal at olympics is not a mean task .. believe me its pretty tuff .. may b u feel life of a person is much more imp than a Game .. our jawans/officers must b covered in a much better way .. but i really got pissed off when i got to knw our Cricketers got such huge money in the last edition of IPL .. its just absurd !! ..

i do like the service of apollo though.. they were not that great in the beginning but now a days i hear its just brilliant..

i think it all depends on the ppl's mindset..

Hi Renu,
As long as we continue to embrace
Americanism, we will see tipping and other similar practices entering Indian society. I dont think we can stop it.
Cheers,
Salil

A very nice post indeed, I guess Hyderabad is changing at a faster pace thanks to the IT Hub at Hi-Tec City and also the prominence of the Telugu population in USA.

I do agree that tips are a menace and we don't really know how much is enough and as you rightly put it, they sometimes earn a lot on tips alone.

I look at the growth of Hyderabad by the number of cars that are being inducted to the already packed to the brim roads. God only knows what is going to happen in Hyderabad in 3 years time...it would be faster to walk then drive.

Balvinder Balli said...

I think giving a tip to really poor worker is not out of the place, but yes certainly not to the ones who are earning more than the tip giver.

Secondly giving away money as award to the sportpersons is highly ploiticised exercise. If the govt spends that much amount on developing the sport there will be many Bindras. It was a shame to see India at hopeless 50th position in the medal tally in the recent olympics.

Thirdly the compensation paid to those killed in terrorist acts in the cities is an insult to the soldiers who daily loose their life and limb fighting such terrorists away from the media glare.

And lastly Renu there is a Tag waiting for you on my blog. Please pick that up. I learnt the linking from you only. So i have linked you

An initiative taken by every individual in right direction will solve most of the problems.

Wow renu...so many topics under 1 head....read it & smiled & thought "Our Renu is back in Action:-D"
Agree with u totally...esp on the tips part of it....its the pits. Tipping has become a way of life. A few of us have to get together to put a stop to this menace:-/.

Renu said...

My Space: In sports also, only few sports are given more than their due and rest are completely ignored.
Idea behind tips was just that u state, but now it has become a nuisance, when u get down from an auto, he also say---maam chai paani ka de do:(
As for coolies, yes I apeal to all, the NGOs to look into this, and bring some semblance to it.

Raghu: yeah Banglore may be ebtter in climate, but in all other respects Hyd is much better--in the restaurants, malls and other places.
I dont want to take away anything from anybody:) but there must be a reason, Olymic medal is important but so is the security of people.I really feel very irritated with the amount these cricketers and filmstars are getting, no logic anywhere:).

Ani: In apollo service is good though charges are quite high.

Salil: But why? why should we brace americanism, what is wrong with Indianism:)

Sukku: Hyderabd will reach saturation point very fast, because in some places multistoreys are being constructed choc a block and density will be too high then:(
I dont believe in tips, they must be optional and only given for extraordinary service. Now a days..if u dont give tip, u get really derogatory stares....and that is not acceptable to me:)

balvinder: nobody gives the tip to a poor worker..that is the irony..more fancy the person..higher the amount of tip:)

About the compensation, I also agree with you, we must honour our police and army both suitably.
Thanks for the tag:) I love them.

Hobo: seems to me that I am popularising Hyderabad:)
yeah , whenevr u visit,Shiparaman is a must:)

Reflection: Thanks:) For the tips, I think we must stop giving it, no matter what anybody says or how they stare at us. When we go to restaurant-tip the waiter, tip the doorman also:)....no way:)

oh ye there isnt any logic in actors n cricketers getting such huge money .. i knw their domains r also difficult .. but still its a bit too much ..

The tips funda reminds me of a funny incident that happened few months back .. one day our maid asked my mom to give bonus !! .. we were shocked ! .. what a stage we have reached !! ..

No no .. i still believe bangalore is better .. hehe ..

Renu said...

Raghu: I feel all the domain are difficult:), its not easy in any profession.
Oh yes, what we give them on Diwali..like sari, some utensils ,sweets and tip....that is a bonus only and they mostly get in bonus a month salary:).

I am a diehard hyd,fan:)

Cess; I am so happy to see u back:) how are u now?
and yes we will certainly meet in March.

Sukku: U too, and keep visiting:)

Sukku said...

Yes I would be visiting you often...now that I have added you on my blog list...

Good post.

I really dun u'stand why actors and sports ppl get paid alot. Mebbe cos we humans r really shallow and crave for that sort of thing?

Keshi.

Renu said...

Keshi: Thanks Keshi:)
Its we the public only who give them this status of demi gods, and all that money ultimatel comes from the tax payer's pocket only:(

about coolies.. in my opinion they definitely need trollies.. once i hired an old guy coolie n cudnt c him lift everything with so much pain in his face.. then on i decided never to hire a coolie.. but again i wonder poor things wat ll they do for a living...

tips giving is for better service.. once a upon a time.. now tht its become a habit.. its lost its meaning!

Renu said...

Sansmerci: First of all, where were you? busy? I was missing u:)
many times I see an impoverished weak old man taking all the luggage, feel so bad, even give him more than asked for, but its once only, it doesnt make his life any better, because all the people travelling by train need some help for carrying luggage and within their means, so the solution can be only Ramps and trolleys.
For tips..we must not give where service charge is included, even at other places also it must not be mandatory.

Anonymous said...

I think there is no harm in giving a few more rupees to somebody who did a service to you. This is an accepted practice across the world. It is also an acknowledgement of the quality of service. You are not expected to pay if the service was bad anyway!

Renu said...

Shaji: I take it this way...no-one is doing any service to me,but doing his job and I am paying for that. But this is also true that this is an accepted service acroos the world, but that is no reason ,not to question it.
Now it is not as if we pay for a good service..no...one is supposed to pay and that too sometinme around 10-15% of the total bill. and what about..when service charge is included in the bill?

Hyd: I was there last year and though it was a very short visit, I agree with you. It looked like a very forward and modern city...
Children living separately: In a way it is nice to know that parents are finally thinking about themselves and enjoying their life after the kids are all grown up...everyone needs their space and independence and it is nice to maintain a good relation and give each other that
Tip: I agree with you on this front. But this tip business is mcuh bigger and frustrating in US where even the Front desk staff at the best hotels expect a tip! Imagine this guy wearing a 3 piece suit, well educated and everything wants a tip?! Guess they get this way also because their basic salary is very little (the employers do not pay them much where the tips are expected to be high)
Coolie: I agree there should be a standard price and trolleys for them just like an airport
MC Sharma: Again thats the sad part in our country. Jaan ki koi kimat nahi hai.

Deeplydip: I have been watching Hyd from 2004, and in the last 4 yrs I have seen the drastic change.

tips; this is what frustrates me, if u think about it we are being charged by the people running these businesses, they are laughing all the way to bank..like charging a good amt for dishes, and then tip, indirectly we are paying the salry of their employes. I serious advocate..stop giving tips.Once in A Taj hotel I saw that everytime a boy comes in the room...bring tea, or clothes or anything...he expects a tip.

Anonymous said...

i am in total agreement wid ur statement that the tip giving system should not be made mandatory.it should be left upto the will of the tip giver to give or not to give.this tip giving system has made the waiters partial.they r more polite towards their regular tip paying customers and they r least bothered abt the regular non or less tip paying customers.

Renu said...

Rahul: Thanks Rahul for dropping by:) and u have rightly observed that this tip system brings discrimination among the customers, so it must be abolished completely.
